Bishop Haller Visits

November 23, 2016

The Southeast District played host to Bishop Laurie Haller last Tuesday, November 15. She has set a goal to spend “at least a day in each district before Christmas” in order to get acquainted with the people in her new ministry setting. She arrived in Iowa in September after being elected to the episcopacy at the North Central Jurisdictional Conference last July in Peoria.skate-church-2016

The bishop began her day at the district office, visiting with Deborah Stowers, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant and chair of the Iowa Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, and Don Wiley, chair of the Board of Trustees at Iowa Wesleyan University.

She traveled north to visit with clergy from Scott County in the afternoon. They met at The Center in Davenport, a mission agency of St. John’s United Methodist Church. The bishop was especially taken with the Skate Church ministry there, which is an effort to reach at-risk students who do not feel comfortable in a traditional church setting. She is pictured on one of the indoor ramps between senior pastor Anne Lippincott on her left and director Penny Kellenberger on her right.

After touring the facilities, the bishop spent about an hour and a half in conversation with pastors about other creative ministries of their churches.
