High School Hospitality

March 1, 2016

The United Methodist Church in Keosauqua is sharing their facility with students while the local hart.maryhigh school is being remodeled extensively.

All three levels of the Van Buren County Community Schools high school are being renovated this year. From January to June the entire south end of the building will be under construction. Some community organizations, including the Indian Hills Center and the Keosauqua Health Care Center, are providing classroom space for students who have been displaced by the renovations.

The United Methodist Church is making room for Spanish classes that are taught throughout each school day. A second room is being used for an algebra class in the afternoons. Students are shuttled to and from the church to get to their classes.

The church had been hoping to begin an after-school reading program, but their plans changed when the school expressed a need for additional classroom space. “It’s a great opportunity for the church to get to know high school students in our area,” said Mary Kathryn Hart, the pastor of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church.
