Discerning God’s Vision

May 7, 2015

Wesley United Methodist Church in Muscatine has a vision to “transform lives through hands-on ministry with children and families in need.” This new ministry emphasis emerged out of the congregation’s Healthy Church Initiative consultation last November. Their efforts crystallized at a visioning meeting this winter when Tim Bower, a member of the school board, shared statistics about poverty in Muscatine. The numbers are startling. For example, “over 75 elementary students only have food to eat when at school and spend the weekend hungry.”franklinschool

Wesley UMC is in the process of living into this calling from God by inviting every person and every group in the congregation to find ways to support the vision. Members have signed up to help kindergarten through second grade students with reading and math at Franklin Elementary School. They are also exploring additional ways to adopt the school by sponsoring a carnival for families of the children, offering parents training in a variety of life skills, and helping with landscaping around the grounds.

Staff members and church council leaders have been identifying ways that the Wesley family is already engaged in hands-on ministries and encouraging additional opportunities to embrace their vision. The congregation also is praying for these ministries weekly in worship.
