Ainsworth Community Church

February 10, 2015

Ainsworth Community Church is a United Methodist/Presbyterian Church (USA) union congregation that has been together since 1973. Ministry with young people is at the heart of much of their outreach to the community.

Their Kid’s Club meets on Wednesday evenings. While the children are together for both learning and fun, adults are gathering at the same time next door to study the book, The 5 Love Languages of Children, by Gary Chapman. Their leader, Sherrie Hazen, has encouraged all adults–not just parents–involved in educating children from infancy through high school to be a part of these small group conversations. “Children need to feel loved to best succeed. But if you and your children speak different love languages, your display of love might get lost in translation–affecting your child’s attitude, behavior, and development.”

The congregation’s mission activities provide opportunities to serve children and their families as well as to involve them in ministries of caring for others. For example, last Christmas they served 62 men, women, and children with food, most of whom received clothing, toys, or another gift of some kind. Their mission activities are done in partnership with youth groups like the Highland 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts of Washington. Their mission committee offered this appreciation in a recent newsletter: “We thank our families who help whenever there is a need. Husbands, children, and grandchildren all help and we couldn’t do it without them.”
