The Bethlehem Peace Light

December 23, 2014

St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport is hosting the Peace Light this December. Each year a Boy or Girls Scout troop from Austria travels to Bethlehem where six lanterns are lighted from the Light of the Nativity, the place where Jesus is thought to have been born. This light then travels to Vienna, Austria, where three of the lanterns are flown to Kennedy Airport in New York City while the other three share the Bethlehem Peace Light throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Iowa Religious Media Services and the Mid Iowa Council of Boy Scout are hosting the Bethlehem Peace Light in Iowa for the fourth year. One of their transfer stops was at St. John’s UMC. The church has invited Christian churches throughout the Quad Cities to extend the light to their own houses of worship, as well.

The Peace Light that came to Iowa from Bethlehem has travelled on to Texas and the west coast while Iowa volunteers transport “The Light” to Omaha on its way to Colorado and points west. More information about the Peace Light can be found at
