Shared Ministries in Burlington

April 29, 2014

The Undie Project, a clothing ministry reaching out to impoverished families in Burlington, is one of many shared ministries of the United Methodist churches in the Burlington area.

The project is done in partnership with Toys for Tots. Those families who seek assistance getting Christmas toys for their children are also eligible to receive socks and underwear. In 2013 over 860 children and youth received clothing from the Undie Project.

Shared United Methodist Ministries, or SUMM, involves church members from several congregations: Asbury, First, Grace, Spring Grove, West Hill, and the West Burlington United Methodist churches.

The Undie Project has been serving the community for the last three years. Their partnership is growing to include the local Marine Corps organizers and churches from other denominations in the greater Burlington area. This means that the reach for the ministry will now extend into rural areas of Illinois and Iowa beyond the immediate metropolitan area.

This year the ministry received a Matthew 25 grant from the Southeast District, which is made possible from apportionments gifts from local United Methodist churches throughout the state of Iowa. In addition, our district mission contribution at this June’s Annual Conference session in Des Moines will be for the Undie Project.
