Senior Social, Muscatine

April 21, 2014

The Senior Social at New Hope United Methodist Church in Muscatine provides both food and fellowship for elderly members of the community. Originally started a dozen years ago by Fellowship United Methodist Church, New Hope’s convenient location and accessible facility have been ideal for the ministry.

Typically, 40 to 50 people attend the social, where they enjoy nutritious meals and a variety of activities together. Since many participants live alone, they look forward to the opportunity to interact with others.

The Senior Circle adult day-care in Muscatine is a participating partner in the socials. Besides bringing the people in their care to events, they provide a sugar-free dessert as a part of the meal. In addition, the Senior Social gets support from the local newspaper and radio station in Muscatine, both of whom provide publicity for events.

A Matthew 25 grant from the Southeast District helps with their ministry expenses. The funds are made possible from apportionment gifts contributed by local United Methodist churches throughout the state of Iowa.
